The Magna Carta Holy Grail

It was the night of game 5, of the 2013 NBA Finals... during the halftime show. ABC went on a commercial break and seemingly out of nowhere there was Jay Z, standing on a balcony with a masterful piano peace accompanying his actions as a background. The Ad was the official announcement of the release of Magna Carta Holy Grail, Hov's 13th studio album. Tha ad featured appearances from producers Timberland, Pharell, Swizz Beats and Def Jam co-founder Rick Rubin aka Gandalf The Great (my nigga Orrin @OrrinJoseph said that shit, i thought that was funny as fuck), and were accompanied by an array of fuckin phenomenal instrumentals. This was it, in two weeks we were gonna have a new Hov record, TWO WEEKS. First 1million users of Samsung Galaxy s3's or Note I+II can had the option of downloading an app to get the album plus bonus material free(fuck you still tho Android, iphone all day baby!) With all this being said, we were primed for the release of an album with the most unique n hype marketing strategy ever in hiphop, and by Hiphop's biggest artist alive. So the question remains... did this shit live up to tha hype, is this the magnum opus, THE magna carta... Le Holy Grail (n all that other philosophical terminology n shit). Two words... FUCK YEA

The album starts off with a BANG, Justin Timberlake( that Robin Thicke wanna be) sings his ass off on that first track, that shit gives me goosebumps. Holy Grail is Hov detailing a celebrity's fight with fame and success, in quite a somber(it took me a while to spell that word, thanks Daniel) manner, but still it cmes across so epic and grand. Picasso Baby just slaps you across the face after (no really it does, that reord hopped out my CD player and slapped the shit outta me). Timberland produced one of the hardest beats in modern day rap, and the beat change at the end of the record?!?!!? I wasn't fuckin ready bruh, I literally had to stop the album and go for a walk, and like think about my life and goals... and whether or not I deserve this shit unno.(*phew*) The album takes a dip ( IN MY FUCKIN OPINION) at fuckwithmeyouknowigotit. No Rick Ross you actually don't got it, stop.(well not on this record at least) Hov's flow was boring-ish but for the purpos of the song it was aiteee, I ain't mad at it. Frank Ocean came in so classic on Oceans, it gives the song that introspective feel that Hov was conveying. He was rapping about life and life's journey's and trials and how everything you do or experience is like an ocean. (you know all that deep shit you Drake stans can't understand) This was a fuckin excellent track. FUTW is classic Hov, like this shit could slide onto the Blueprint and uoeno bruh. I LOVE this record, prolly my 4th of 5th off tha album. Somewhereinamerica can be summed up into 4 of the most classic words to date, "twerk miley miley twerk"... PHENOMENAL RECORD, a superb beat with Hov just going in on with that bragadocious flow. Heaven was Jay Z(oh btw Hov don't use hyphens no more #factsonly) getting personal and opening up about religion and his beliefs or disbeliefs, depending on how you take it. This is something most people are afraid to say, fuck it now though, Hov gave you permission to get real. On Part II Jay Z gave us real niggaz, unno with a HEART n shit (yea i actually like and love chicks, im emotional like that, #nohomo #factsonly) a song to ride to n share with that special someone. It a really cool way to express true love, with Beyonce on tha hook, its a classic hiphop/rnb duet, one of their better ones. Beach Is Better though.... WOOOOWWWWW!!!! Why the fuck is this 56 seconds yo, that is all i thought when i finished listening to this for the 900th time. Jay Z gave you authentic hiphop here, appreciate it. Then came that moment on the album i was fuckin slappin my sister in tha face repeatedly for BBC... one word, NAS. And when Hov came in on the 2nd verse like "imma make sure you hear my muhfuckin jewelry *shakes chains*" This song was fresshhhh and Pharell gave us a beat for the ages here yo... this was like my 2nd favourite song. Jaz Z saw Hov giving us another potential classic, getting very personal about his relationship with his daughter, but from the future.... a possible one where himself and Beyonce have divorced and he is apologising to his daughter for the life she will have. Very unique spin on the father daughter topic, great song. Nickels and Dimes sound like that Blueprint Hov too yo, an inspirational record for like his past homies or people in general, detailing how having a money making mindset can reap success, and also giving back. A rare style of record from J but much needed.

Overall , after touching on most of the songs(not all, because well I ain't wanna bore you) I found the album to be veryyy complete and such a great album. Where it stands in the grand scheme of the historical 3 weeks in hiphop (Born Sinner, Gifted, Yeezus, Watching Movies and MCHG) will be addressed in a special blog post later on, but for now behold the Magnum Opus of modern day albums. Lemme school you dummies a bit. The Magna Carta document (in a fuckin nutshell and in layman's terms) was a document signed and passed by a King a long fuckin time ago, like the 1200's or sumtin, that ordered the powers that be to decrease taxes and remove some other stringent rules/laws that were in place at the time... basically a document that showed the people another way to live, and freeed them from the supreme norms to an extent. Much like the actual document, MCHG showed the hiphop community severalll things some of  which are; You can go platinum before your music is released, you can drop an album two weeks after releasing it with the right marketing, You can give out a million copies of your album for free but still go gold in the first week, you can release lyrics instead of singles... and the list goes fuckin on. This, much like Yeezus, had many first-times and created an avenue for future hiphop artists or artists in general, to walk a new path. That coupled with the phenomenal music I detailed above, makes for a great album. On the list of Hov albums where does it rank you ask?! Look out for that "lists" series on my blog nigga! #HipHopMade

My rating of this album, anywhere from a 9.25 - 9.5 outta 10. Go BUY THE SHIT ON ITUNES/PHYSICALLY GOTDAMNIT!
If you don't like my review.... "Just let em be great."
Peace bruh!
